Pieces Of A Dream

Formed in Philadelphia in 1976 by keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and bassist Cedric Napoleon, Pieces Of A Dream developed at the intersection of jazz fusion, funk, R&B and, over time, a highly melodic smooth jazz. Still teenagers at the start, the group took its name from a Michel Legrand theme they often played and quickly came under the wing of Grover Washington Jr., who produced their first three albums: Pieces of a Dream (1981), We Are One (1982) and Imagine This (1983). During this period, Pieces Of A Dream cultivated an urban, supple sound—often instrumental—driven by keyboards, bass lines and funky rhythms, while also including a few vocal tracks such as "Warm Weather", "Fo‑Fi‑Fo" and "What Can I Do?". Over the decades the band has evolved its lineup around the Lloyd–Harmon core, incorporating musicians like David Dyson on bass and Tony Watson Jr. on saxophone, while maintaining a steady discography from Joyride (1986) and Bout Dat Time (1989) to Soul Intent (2009), In the Moment (2013), Just Funkin’ Around (2017), On Another Note (2019), Fired Up (2021) and We Got This (2025).
