Phosphorescent

Under the name Phosphorescent, Matthew Houck has been developing a songwriting approach since the early 2000s that sits between folk, country and indie rock. Born in Alabama, he was first active in Athens, Georgia, then lived in New York before settling in Nashville. Phosphorescent evolved from a project defined by spare, stripped-down recordings to a broader sound, incorporating guitar, keyboard and brass arrangements. After the debut A Hundred Times or More (2003) came releases such as Pride (2007), with its minimalist, atmospheric textures, and To Willie (2009), a tribute to Willie Nelson’s standards that anchors the project in a reimagined country tradition. With Here’s to Taking It Easy (2010) and Muchacho (2013) the project moved toward a more panoramic songwriting style, where melancholic ballads and more upbeat tracks coexist within an Americana register. Based in Nashville, Houck later released C’est La Vie (2018), which addresses family life and travel more directly; the monthly cover series Full Moon Project preceded Revelator (2024), which continues the introspective vein. On stage Phosphorescent appears solo or with an expanded lineup, performing in clubs and at festivals across the United States and Europe.
