Philippe Lavil
Born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, in 1947, Philippe Lavil developed a style of French popular song infused with Antillean, Caribbean and Latin colours, with a marked taste for supple rhythms and narrative choruses. Sent as a teenager to a boarding school in the Drôme, he discovered song through Graeme Allwright before recording his first 45 rpm in 1969, and he drew attention as early as 1970 with "Avec les filles, je ne sais pas." After an appearance on the Olympia stage alongside Julien Clerc in 1975, Philippe Lavil followed an irregular career path until the early 1980s, when his repertoire took on a more tropical hue with songs such as "Il tape sur des bambous," "Rio" and "San Miguel." His path crossed several songwriters, including Didier Barbelivien, and it also opened onto the duet format with "Kolé séré," recorded in 1987 with Jocelyne Béroard. Over the decades, Philippe Lavil has evolved this aesthetic between chanson, French pop and Creole inspirations on albums such as "Février" (1978), "Nonchalances" (1986), "De Bretagne ou d’ailleurs" (1990), "Retour à la case créole" (2002), "Calypso" (2007), "La part des anges" (2011) and "Sous le même soleil" (2023). In parallel, he has occasionally worked as an actor in film and television.
