Peter Maffay
Born in 1949 in Brașov, Romania, Peter Maffay grew up in Transylvania before moving with his family to Germany in the mid‑1960s, where he joined the local beat and rock scene. He first attracted attention at the end of the decade as a schlager singer, then gradually steered his career toward melodic German‑language rock, blending ballads, folk influences and touches of country. His first long‑playing album, “Für das Mädchen, das ich liebe” (1970), launched a prolific discography that accompanied his shift from pop‑variety music to a more electric sound from the late 1970s, notably with “Steppenwolf” (1979) and “Revanche” (1980). From 1983 Maffay developed the narrative world of Tabaluga through a series of concept albums aimed at family audiences, which led to numerous stage adaptations. Active as a group under the name Peter Maffay Band, he has toured widely in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, regularly collaborates with other German‑language rock and pop musicians, and continues to work as a songwriter focused on lyrical songs often rooted in personal and social themes.
