Peter Hunnigale

Born in 1960 in south London, Peter Hunnigale occupies a place in British reggae history at the crossroads of lovers rock, roots reggae and the discomix formats championed by sound system culture. Initially the bassist for the Vibes Corner Collective, Hunnigale began recording as a singer in the early 1980s with the single "Slipping Away" in 1983, then developed his work around the Street Vibes label, which he founded with Fitzroy Blake. His supple voice and direct songwriting quickly established him on the English reggae scene, between romantic numbers, spiritual themes and more conscious-minded tracks. Over his career he has collaborated notably with Tippa Irie—recording The New Decade in 1991 and Done Cook and Currie in 1992—while pursuing a solo path marked by In This Time (1987), Mr. Vibes (1992) and Mr. Government (1994). His work also engaged producers such as Gussie Clarke in Jamaica and Mad Professor, whose dub approach accompanied his shift toward a more roots-oriented sound in the mid-1990s. Hunnigale also appeared on major reggae stages, including Reggae Sunsplash in 1996, and continued his discography with African Tears (2001), Rhythm & Song (2006), Free Soul (2008) and Pizza and Alcohol (2019).
