Pedro The Lion

Led by Seattle songwriter David Bazan, Pedro The Lion emerged in the mid-1990s as an indie rock project at the intersection of slowcore and a strongly narrative folk songwriting. Bazan remained the principal composer and vocalist while the lineup changed, and the group became rooted in the US independent scene and a network of small venues and intensive touring. Pedro The Lion released a debut LP, “It’s Hard to Find a Friend” (1998), followed by “Winners Never Quit” (2000), an album with a near-conceptual narrative structure, then “Control” (2002) featuring more assertive guitars, and “Achilles Heel” (2004), before Bazan spent a lengthy period recording under his own name. The project was revived in the late 2010s with “Phoenix” (2019), a largely autobiographical record focused on childhood and memory, followed by “Havasu” (2022) and “Santa Cruz” (2024), forming a cycle of albums centered on cities that marked the musician’s life. Onstage and in the studio, Pedro The Lion crafts mid-tempo songs driven by restrained guitars, simple rhythms and direct vocals that foreground introspective lyrics about doubt, religious heritage, family relationships and everyday observation.
