Paul Piché

Québécois singer-songwriter Paul Piché was born in 1953 in La Minerve, in the Laurentians. He studied anthropology at the Université de Montréal before turning to songwriting. Active from the mid-1970s on Montreal’s café stages, he developed a French-language folk-rock repertoire dominated by social and political themes and the everyday life of working-class communities. In 1977 he released the album À qui appartient le beau temps ?, which established a writing style rooted in engaged Québécois song; he followed with L’escalier in 1980 and Sur le chemin des incendies in 1988, showing a move toward rockier arrangements while retaining an acoustic foundation. His lyrics, often connected to social justice issues, labour movements and the debate on Quebec sovereignty, coexist with more intimate songs. Surrounded by musicians from Montreal’s rock scene, Paul Piché performs regularly in Québec and across the francophone world, and takes part in numerous collective events and popular rallies. Alongside his albums, he has also composed music for film and television, maintaining a continuous presence in francophone song over the decades.
