Patti LuPone

Born in Northport, on Long Island, Patti LuPone established herself in the American landscape of musical theatre and stage singing from the 1970s, after training at Juilliard School and her beginnings with The Acting Company. Her career unfolds between Broadway, London's West End, opera, and recital formats, with a mezzo-soprano voice paired with a direct, energetic, and highly theatrical interpretation. Patti LuPone quickly marked her career with Evita in 1979, then went on to central roles in Les Misérables in London, Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, War Paint, and Company, where her work is often rooted in the Anglo-American musical repertoire of Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill, or Cole Porter. Her discography is mainly tied to stage recordings, notably Evita (1979, recording of the Broadway original cast), Les Misérables (1985, London original cast), Sweeney Todd (2005), Gypsy (2008), Company (2018) and the live album Patti LuPone at Les Mouches, released in 2008 from a 1980 show.
