Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France
Based in Paris and the permanent ensemble of Radio France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France has been part of French radio history since 1937, the year the Orchestre radio-symphonique was founded. Reconstituted during the war, the ensemble took the name Orchestre philharmonique de la Radiodiffusion française in 1952, became the Orchestre philharmonique de l’ORTF in 1964, moved to Radio France in 1975 and was refounded in 1976 as the Nouvel Orchestre philharmonique. The name Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France was adopted in 1989. This symphony orchestra is notable for a flexible mode of operation that enables it to perform classical and Romantic repertoire as well as 20th‑century music and contemporary creations, both in large forces and in smaller formations. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France has worked under conductors such as Eugène Bigot, Gilbert Amy, Marek Janowski, Myung‑Whun Chung and Mikko Franck, with Jaap van Zweden announced from 2026. Resident at the Radio France Auditorium, the orchestra also appears on tour and at festivals, while maintaining regular radio broadcasts, symphonic concerts, operatic projects and programmes for young audiences.
