Pole
Born in Düsseldorf, Stefan Betke, under the name Pole, developed an electronic body of work that emerged in the late 1990s and sits between glitch, dub techno, ambient, and minimal experimentation. His approach initially centered on a very particular use of sonic accidents and degraded textures, integrated into slow rhythms, dub bass lines, and sparse, uncluttered structures. This aesthetic runs through the albums 1 (1998), 2 (1999), and 3 (2000), then R (2001), which extend this exploration of sound material and space. With Pole (2003), Stefan Betke shifts his writing toward slightly more direct forms while keeping his appetite for detail, silence, and subtle variations. The rest of his career includes Steingarten (2007), Wald (2015), Fading (2020), and Tempus (2022), showing continuity in exploring sober, deep, and tactile electronic music. In parallel with his productions, Pole co-founded the label ~scape in 1999 with Barbara Preisinger, an entity linked to the German electronic scene that focuses on the intersections between minimalism, abstraction, and dub culture. Also active as a mastering engineer, Stefan Betke places Pole on a durable trajectory of European electronic music.
