Nino D'Angelo
Born in Naples in 1957, Nino D'Angelo grew up in a working-class neighborhood and attracted attention at an early age on the local scene with songs in the Neapolitan dialect that were first circulated on cassette. In the early 1980s he became known throughout Italy through a series of musical films in which he both sang and played the lead role, placing him within the neomelodica strand of Neapolitan song—somewhere between sentimental popular music and urban milieu chronicle. His repertoire from that period rests on direct, catchy melodies, straightforward language and imagery tied to Naples’ working-class districts. From the 1990s onward he gradually steered his career toward a writing style closer to the Italian singer-songwriter tradition, releasing albums in which Neapolitan coexists with Italian and whose lyrics more explicitly address social change, the city’s memory and family relationships. A regular presence at several editions of the Festival di Sanremo, he has simultaneously developed a sustained career as an actor in film and on stage. Today Nino D'Angelo’s music sits at the crossroads of canzone napoletana, Italian pop and the ballad, with a constant attention to storytelling and local rootedness, while he continues to perform in Italy and abroad.
