Nick Heyward

Born in Beckenham, Kent, Nick Heyward grew up in south London and emerged in the early 1980s as the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of Haircut One Hundred, a band associated with the British new wave pop scene. His writing combined crisp melodies, bright guitars, supple rhythms and soul‑funk accents—a formula crystallized on the album Pelican West (1982). After leaving the group in 1983, Heyward pursued a solo career, producing refined, direct pop that was sometimes more introspective, notably on North of a Miracle (1983), Postcards from Home (1986) and I Love You Avenue (1988). In the 1990s he broadened his palette toward a more expansive pop‑rock on From Monday to Sunday (1993), Tangled (1995) and The Apple Bed (1998), without abandoning his taste for clear arrangements and melody-centred songs. His discography also includes more independent projects, such as Open Sesame Seed (2001) with Greg Ellis, The Mermaid and the Lighthouse Keeper (2006) with India Dupre, and Woodland Echoes (2017), recorded with contributions from his son Oliver. Alongside his solo work, Heyward has reunited with Haircut One Hundred on stage on several occasions.
