Philippe Katerine

Born in 1968 in Thouars (Deux-Sèvres), Philippe Katerine has, since the early 1990s, developed a body of work at the crossroads of French chanson, experimental pop, and spoken-word writing, marked by a taste for short forms and offbeat lyrics. After a relatively intimate start—supported by minimalist arrangements and bossa nova influences on albums such as « Les mariages chinois » (1991) and « Mes mauvaises fréquentations » (1996)—he gradually broadened his palette toward a more rhythmic, electronic pop, notably with « Les créatures » (2000) and « Robots après tout » (2005), where his use of repetition and refrains plays a central role. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, with records like « Philippe Katerine » (2010) and « Confessions » (2019), he alternated starkly stripped-down songs with more orchestrated settings and numerous vocal collaborations, while maintaining a writing style that embraces the absurd, the playful, and a certain melancholy. Alongside his work as a composer and performer, Philippe Katerine contributes as a writer to other projects, composes film scores, and pursues an acting career in cinema, appearing regularly in French productions and receiving the César Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in « Le Grand Bain ».
