Peter Hook
Born in Broughton, Salford, England, Peter Hook established himself in the Manchester scene from the late 1970s with a very melodic bass style, often played high on the neck, which defined Joy Division's post‑punk aesthetic. A co-founder of the band with Bernard Sumner, Hook appears on the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980), before continuing the project with New Order after Ian Curtis’s death. With New Order he took part in the group's evolution toward songwriting that blended new wave, synth‑pop, alternative rock and dance music on records such as Movement (1981), Power, Corruption & Lies (1983) and Technique (1989). At the same time he pursued other projects—most notably Revenge, Monaco with David Potts, and later Freebass—and produced several bands associated with the late‑1980s Manchester scene. Since 2010 Hook has performed with Peter Hook & The Light, a formation in which he recreates Joy Division and New Order material on stage while continuing work rooted in the post‑punk and alternative dance legacy. His career remains closely tied to the history of Factory Records and the Haçienda, two key landmarks of Manchester’s musical culture.
