Pennywise
Formed in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise emerged in the late 1980s within the American West Coast hardcore punk scene, developing a fast, melodic sound strongly marked by skate punk. Built around Fletcher Dragge’s guitar, Jim Lindberg’s vocals, Byron McMackin’s drums and Jason Thirsk’s bass, the band crafted on Pennywise (1991) and Unknown Road (1993) a style combining anthemic choruses, rapid tempos and lyrics rooted in social, political and personal concerns. About Time (1995) and Full Circle (1997), recorded after Thirsk’s death and the arrival of Randy Bradbury on bass, consolidated Pennywise’s place on American and European punk stages, notably through extensive touring and festival appearances. Across later albums such as Straight Ahead (1999), Land of the Free? (2001), From the Ashes (2003) and The Fuse (2005), Pennywise remained with Epitaph Records and maintained a direct, melodic punk aesthetic. A temporary change of singer, with Zoli Téglás on All or Nothing (2012), followed by Jim Lindberg’s return before Yesterdays (2014) and Never Gonna Die (2018), illustrates the band’s evolution while preserving its stylistic continuity.
