Pendragon

Formed in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Pendragon took shape in 1978 around guitarist and singer Nick Barrett, initially under the name Zeus Pendragon before adopting its final form. Associated with the British neo-progressive wave of the early 1980s, Pendragon operated in the same circuit as Marillion, Pallas and Twelfth Night, with appearances at the Marquee and a slot at the Reading Festival in 1983. The debut album, The Jewel (1985), established a melodic progressive rock driven by keyboards and narrative developments, while Kowtow (1988) moved toward a more direct songwriting approach. From The World (1991), released on the band's own label Toff Records, Pendragon returned to a broader aesthetic, continued on The Window of Life (1993), The Masquerade Overture (1996) and Not of This World (2001). The band's core stabilized around Nick Barrett, Peter Gee and Clive Nolan, despite several drummer changes over the years. Since Believe (2005), Pendragon has at times hardened its language, incorporating darker textures and elements close to progressive metal on Pure (2008), Passion (2011) and Men Who Climb Mountains (2014), before Love Over Fear (2020). Pendragon's music remains marked by a balance between melodic lyricism, a 'singing' guitar and progressive architecture.
