Mutter

Formed in Berlin in 1986 in the wake of Campingsex, Mutter has developed since its beginnings a slow, heavy and direct form of German rock, infused with noise rock, punk and at times a doom-like tension, with German lyrics delivered by Max Müller. The band first belonged to the Berlin underground before, in the early 1990s, being associated with certain German independent scenes, including the Hamburger Schule, while maintaining its own distinct path. Mutter’s first period is anchored by Ich schäme mich Gedanken zu haben die andere Menschen in ihrer Würde verletzen (1989), Komm! (1991), Du bist nicht mein Bruder (1993), Hauptsache Musik (1994) and Nazionali (1996), records that shifted their writing between rock austerity, taut ballads and formal experimentation. After Europa gegen Amerika (2001), Mutter continued with CD des Monats (2004), Trinken Singen Schießen (2010), Mein kleiner Krieg (2011), Text und Musik (2014), Der Traum vom Anderssein (2017) and Ich könnte Du sein, aber Du niemals ich (2022). Around Max Müller and drummer Florian Koerner von Gustorf, Mutter has undergone several lineup changes while retaining an abrasive, stripped-down and very physical live sound.
