Molotov
Formed in Mexico City in the mid-1990s, Molotov brings together Tito Fuentes, Miky Huidobro, Paco Ayala, and Randy Ebright around a blend of rap, alternative rock, funk, and metal. The band drew attention in 1997 with the album ¿Dónde jugarán las niñas?, where Molotov combines overdriven guitars, prominent bass lines, and vocal exchanges in Spanish and English with a satirical, socially minded tone. Apocalypshit in 1999 extends this formula by sharpening the political edge and the crossover between rap rock and Latin influences, while 2003’s Dance and Dense Denso heightens the rhythmic, hard-hitting side of Molotov’s sound. With 2004’s Con todo respeto, the group tackles covers of rock and Latin standards, rearranging them in its own aesthetic, then explores its internal variations on 2007’s Eternamiente, conceived from projects initially developed separately by the members. The live release Desde Rusia con amor in 2012 testifies to Molotov’s international reach and regular presence on stages across Latin America, North America, and Europe, before a return to the studio format with 2014’s Agua maldita. Molotov’s lyrics address corruption, border identities, power relations, and everyday speech, which has subjected the band to several episodes of censorship while cementing its place within a critically minded strain of Latin rock.
