Overhead
Born in the Yvelines department in the early 2000s, Overhead initially formed as a trio around Nicolas Leroux with Christophe Demaret and Jean-Claude Kebaili, working in a register between jazz-rock and taut pop, driven by expansive vocals and arrangements that retain pronounced jazz accents. Overhead released its first album, Silent Witness, in 2002, then moved toward a more direct, Anglo-Saxon songwriting approach on No Time Between in 2004, while keeping a melancholic tone and structures inherited from jazz fusion. This shift coincided with a lineup change: Nicolas Leroux moved to drums and the group brought in, among others, Chakib Chambi and Richard Cousin. After an initial period of activity that was interrupted in 2005, Overhead resurfaced in 2011 and returned in 2012 with Death by Monkeys, recorded in Nicolas Leroux’s studio. Within the French scene, Overhead thus occupies a singular space between indie rock, sophisticated pop and jazz-tinged writing, with a short but notable trajectory marked by several reconfigurations.
