Mike Lindup
Born in London in 1959 into a musical family, Mike Lindup early on built a career as a keyboardist and singer shaped by jazz, funk, pop and Latin American rhythms. He joined Level 42 in 1980 and has played a prominent role on keyboards, in the backing vocals and occasionally as lead singer, with a style that blends jazz-funk harmonies, pop groove and soul inflections; his falsetto voice gives several of the group's tracks a distinctive color. Alongside this trajectory he developed solo work with Changes in 1990 and Conversations with Silence in 2003, two records that opened his writing to Latin-jazz, more acoustic textures and a more introspective melodic approach. His collaborations also led him into Brazilian and Afro-Latin scenes, notably with Negrocan and Da Lata, and alongside musicians such as Dominic Miller, Billy Cobham and Alex Wilson. Returning to Level 42 on a lasting basis from 2006, Mike Lindup has continued his solo activity with the EP On The One (2011) and the album Changes 2 (2023), where funk, soul, jazz and disco intersect.
