Miguel Poveda
Born in 1973 in Badalona, Catalonia, Miguel Poveda honed his art in the region’s peñas flamencas before being noticed at the 1993 Festival del Cante de las Minas — a decisive moment that anchored him in the cante jondo sphere. A cantaor with Catalan roots but strong ties to Andalusia, he explores the many facets of flamenco while engaging in dialogue with the copla and the poetic song. His first album, Viento del Este (1995), establishes an approach attached to traditional forms, whereas Desglaç (2005) opened a distinctive path by adapting texts by regional poets into Catalan. With Coplas del querer (2009) he immersed himself in the Andalusian song repertoire and continued his poetic exploration with Sonetos y Poemas para la Libertad (2015) and Enlorquecido (2018), the latter centered on the world of Federico García Lorca. His discography alternates flamenco recital recordings, orchestrated projects and literary tributes, often in collaboration with guitarists and arrangers from both the flamenco scene and contemporary Spanish music. Performing widely across Spain, Europe and Latin America, Miguel Poveda has built a career in which cante flamenco converses with several languages, concert formats and cultural contexts without losing touch with its popular roots.
