Mexican Institute Of Sound
Behind Mexican Institute of Sound is Camilo Lara, a producer, DJ and composer based in Mexico, who launched the project in the mid‑2000s in the wake of the Mexican electronic scene. Under the name Instituto Mexicano del Sonido he developed a language that blends electronica, cumbia, dub, hip‑hop, alternative pop and references to Mexican popular music, often through sound collages and samples borrowed from older repertoires. Mexican Institute of Sound took shape on record with Méjico Máxico (2006), followed by Piñata (2007), Soy Sauce (2009), Politico (2012), Disco Popular (2017) and Distrito Federal (2021) — a sequence of albums that has steered the project between a festive approach, social commentary and denser production. Camilo Lara has also worked on remixes and collaborations, notably with Toy Selectah, and his career extends beyond concerts and albums: he contributed to the musical world of the film Coco and more recently composed the score for the film A Million Miles Away. On stage as in the studio, Mexican Institute of Sound remains a personal project focused on the mix of contemporary urban culture and Mexico’s musical memory.
