Merkules
Based in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canadian rapper Merkules—born Cole Stevenson—belongs to an independent hip-hop scene shaped by the legacy of North American rap from the 1990s and 2000s. Active from a very young age under other monikers on local circuits and in battle rap, he gradually came to prominence in the early 2010s through a series of online freestyles and remixes, reworking widely circulated instrumentals and layering them with a highly personal narrative. His music moves between dark boom-bap and more contemporary productions, sometimes influenced by trap, with generally measured tempos that allow for clear diction and a pronounced sense of storytelling. Merkules’ lyrics address trauma, violence, addiction, mental health, and everyday life on the outskirts of Vancouver in a direct manner, while also drawing on braggadocio and an often world-weary sense of humor. Over multiple independently released projects throughout the 2010s, he refined a more introspective, melodic writing style, incorporating an increasing number of sung hooks. He has collaborated widely with other North American independent rappers and tours regularly in Canada and the United States, cultivating a stage presence centered on live rap energy and a deliberate closeness with his audience.
