Mavado

Born David Constantine Brooks in Kingston and raised in the Cassava Piece district, Mavado rose to prominence in the mid-2000s in the wake of Jamaican dancehall, with a taut, melodic, and dark style, at the border between reggae singing and deejaying. Backed in his early days by Bounty Killer, he broke through with "Real McKoy" in 2005, then developed a writing style marked by street narratives, catchy refrains, and an instantly identifiable diction. Mavado subsequently released the albums Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks in 2007 and Mr. Brooks... A Better Tomorrow in 2009, two landmarks in his discography. His trajectory also took him to larger stages, between Jamaica, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with collaborations in rap, grime and dancehall, notably alongside DJ Khaled, Akon, Nicki Minaj, Sean Paul or Kalash. Signed for a time with We the Best Music Group, Mavado also launched Mansion Records, while maintaining a strong anchor in the contemporary dancehall aesthetic, characterized by dry rhythms, sung vocal lines, and tracks that are more meditative or more upfront depending on the period.
