Mother's Finest
Born in the early 1970s in Atlanta, Georgia, Mother's Finest coalesced around vocal duo Joyce “Baby Jean” Kennedy and Glenn Murdock at a time when soul, funk and rock intersected on the American scene. The band developed a powerful funk‑rock sound, blending hard‑edged guitar riffs, highly syncopated rhythm sections and vocal lines rooted in gospel and rhythm and blues — a formula that placed Mother's Finest at the crossroads of rock and African‑American musical cultures. After a self‑titled debut in 1972, the group gained visibility with a new version of “Mother’s Finest” released in 1976 and especially with “Another Mother Further” in 1977, which established their signature sound. They then toured extensively across the United States and Europe, appearing on rock and hard‑rock stages alongside heavier acts while maintaining a pronounced funk foundation. The 1980s and 1990s saw the sound harden, evident on “Iron Age” (1981), “Looks Could Kill” (1989) and “Black Radio Won’t Play This Record” (1992), the latter’s title reflecting the band’s difficulties finding a place on mainstream radio formats. Centered on Kennedy and Murdock, Mother's Finest has continued performing and recording over the decades, preserving its hybrid aesthetic of rock energy, funk groove and soul heritage.
