Mobb Deep
Active since the early 1990s in the Queensbridge neighborhood of New York, Mobb Deep established itself as a leading East Coast hip-hop duo, formed by Havoc (Kejuan Muchita) and Prodigy (Albert Johnson, died 2017). First noticed as teenagers with 'Juvenile Hell' in 1993, Mobb Deep quickly refined a hardcore rap aesthetic marked by dark productions, spare rhythms and minimalist melodic loops, with lyrics portraying life in the projects, everyday violence and pervasive mistrust. The release of 'The Infamous' in 1995 and 'Hell on Earth' in 1996 put Mobb Deep at the center of the New York scene alongside artists like Nas and some members of the Wu-Tang Clan; 'Murda Muzik' in 1999 continued this narrative focus on Queensbridge. Around the turn of the 2000s they followed with 'Infamy' (2001) and 'Amerikaz Nightmare' (2004), then joined G-Unit for 'Blood Money' in 2006, marking a period oscillating between the New York underground and a more mainstream environment. After a hiatus partly caused by Prodigy's incarceration, the duo reunited on stage and in the studio and released 'The Infamous Mobb Deep' in 2014, combining unreleased tracks and new material. Prodigy's death in 2017 interrupted Mobb Deep's trajectory; their recorded legacy remains associated with a particularly raw, stripped-down vision of Queensbridge rap.
