Lowkey
Under the name Lowkey, Kareem Dennis has developed in London a British rap marked by his Iraqi and English origins and by writing focused on war, social justice and international politics. Emerging on the London underground scene in the early 2000s, Lowkey belongs to a hip-hop current dominated by boom bap and conscious rap, featuring a clear flow, dense lyrics and a significant role for spoken word. After several early self-released projects, he issued Dear Listener in 2008 and Soundtrack to the Struggle in 2011, an album that brought wider visibility to his work within the UK hip-hop scene. Lowkey subsequently collaborated with artists such as Akala, Immortal Technique, Wretch 32, Dead Prez and the Outlawz, while taking part in the collective project Mongrel. After a period of withdrawal, he returned with Soundtrack to the Struggle 2 in 2019, continuing a political rap that blends social commentary, an international perspective and formats close to spoken delivery.
