Levellers
Born in Brighton in the late 1980s, Levellers are part of the British alternative scene, blending amplified folk, punk energy and Celtic influences. Formed in 1988 and named after the 17th-century English egalitarian movement, the band early on developed a repertoire where violin, electric guitars and collective vocals underpin lyrics rooted in social issues, politics and alternative lifestyles. Levellers emerged with the album A Weapon Called the Word in 1990 and established themselves more firmly with Levelling the Land in 1991, driven by a taut folk-rock sound, brisk rhythms and rallying choruses. The group continued in this vein through the 1990s with Levellers (1993), Zeitgeist (1995) and Mouth to Mouth (1997), while stepping up their presence on British and European festival stages. The 2000s saw Levellers consolidate their identity with a series of records in which folk-punk was edged with rockier or acoustic elements — from Hello Pig (2000) and Green Blade Rising (2002) to Truth & Lies (2005) and Letters from the Underground (2008). An established touring act, Levellers also launched the independent Beautiful Days festival in Devon from 2003 and relied on their own label, On the Fiddle Recordings, to distribute their releases. Static on the Airwaves (2012), the semi-acoustic project We the Collective (2018) and Peace (2020) extended a trajectory that keeps Levellers associated with electric folk-rock, prominent fiddle, shouted choruses and a consistent focus on themes of protest and collective engagement.
