Ari Hoenig

Born in Philadelphia in 1973, Ari Hoenig has established himself on the New York scene as a jazz drummer, composer, and educator, with a highly crafted approach to rhythm, melody, and metric movement. Trained in an environment where modern jazz, improvisation, and composition intersect, Ari Hoenig began in the late 1990s to develop a language centered on tempo flexibility, polyrhythms, and a drum set conceived as a fully fledged melodic instrument. His leader discography includes Time Travels (1999), The Life of a Day (2002), The Painter (2004), Inversations (2006), Bert’s Playground (2008), Lines of Oppression (2012), The Pauper and the Magician (2016), NY Standard (2018), Conner’s Days (2019), Live (2021), Golden Treasures (2022) and Tea for Three (2024). Ari Hoenig has also performed alongside musicians such as Kenny Werner, Jean-Michel Pilc, Richard Bona, Tigran Hamasyan, and Gilad Hekselman, in contexts ranging from acoustic trio to more open contemporary jazz. Present in many clubs and international festivals, Ari Hoenig also pursues teaching work in parallel, notably in New York, which extends an in-depth exploration of rhythmic independence and improvisation.
