Lee Rocker

Born Leon Drucker in Massapequa, on Long Island in the state of New York, Lee Rocker trained very early on the bass before making the double bass his central instrument, in a register nourished by rockabilly, the 1950s rock’n’roll, blues and a strong sense of rhythm in slap bass. He emerges in the late 1970s with Stray Cats, a trio founded in 1979 with Brian Setzer and Slim Jim Phantom, at a moment when the group reissues a vintage aesthetic mixing punk energy, dry swing and direct references to Elvis Presley or Carl Perkins. Alongside this collective path, Lee Rocker develops a solo career from the 1990s with records such as Big Blue (1994), Atomic Boogie Hour (1995), Bulletproof (2003), Black Cat Bone (2007), The Low Road (2019) and Gather Round (2021), where his playing remains front and center, between roots groove, boogie and blues accents. Lee Rocker also participated in the Phantom, Rocker & Slick project with Slim Jim Phantom and Earl Slick, and has played or recorded with several musicians linked to the history of American rock. Settled in California after his New York beginnings, Lee Rocker continues to alternate concerts under his own name and activities with Stray Cats, in a repertoire centered on the double bass, rockabilly and the classic forms of rock.
