Laurence Jalbert
Born Lise Jalbert in Rivière-au-Renard, Gaspésie, Laurence Jalbert established herself in Quebec’s francophone song scene with a personal songwriting style informed by pop-rock, ballads and folk inflections. Before her solo career she played piano bars from her teens, toured with various bands and wrote for the group Volt in the mid-1980s. After a notable appearance on L’Empire des futures stars in 1987, she released the album Laurence Jalbert in 1990, driven by tracks such as "Tomber", "Rage" and "Au nom de la raison". Her repertoire, often focused on human relationships, vulnerability, anger and the impulse of love, then took shape on Corridors (1993) and Avant le squall (1998). Jalbert also developed a stage project with Dan Bigras, which produced the live album Communio in 2000, before continuing with Et j’espère (2001), Noël des Anges (2005), Une lettre (2011), Ma route (2016) and Au pays de Nana Mouskouri (2019). A fixture on Quebec stages for decades, Laurence Jalbert holds a distinctive place in the local chanson, between rock intensity, direct interpretation and an intimate vein.
