Mark Broom
Born in 1971 in the United Kingdom, Mark Broom developed his career amid the rise of house and techno in the late 1980s after discovering Chicago house and acid house in 1989. Quickly active as a DJ, he became part of the London scene, notably around the record shop FatCat Records, where he met Baby Ford and Ed Handley and Andy Turner of Black Dog Productions. Mark Broom then played at Baby Ford’s club Nude and released his first tracks on General Production Recordings. Initially associated with cerebral, detailed techno, he later steered his production toward a more direct, dancefloor-oriented sound while retaining a taste for stripped-back structures, acidic loops and funky rhythms. In 1994 Mark Broom founded the label Pure Plastic Recordings with Dave Hill, and released his first album Angie Is A Shoplifter in 1996. Under the alias Rue East he released Summer of Blood in 1998 and Indoor Culture in 2001. His discography under his own name also includes Acid House (2010) and Fünfzig (2021). Between solo projects, occasional collaborations and his activity as a DJ, Mark Broom figures in a sustained trajectory of British techno.
