Marissa Nadler
Born in Washington D.C. in 1981 and long based in Boston, Marissa Nadler crafts a songwriting style that blends intimate folk, dream pop and dark Americana. Trained in visual arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, she brings a taste for dreamlike imagery and fragmentary narratives into her music, carried by an airy voice and guitar with slow arpeggios. After starting out on the American independent scene, she released Ballads of Living and Dying (2004) and The Saga of Mayflower May (2005) on the Eclipse label, laying the groundwork for a minimalist acoustic world. Songs III: Bird on the Water (2007) and Little Hells (2009) gradually broadened her sonic palette, before a more pronounced turn toward oneiric textures on Marissa Nadler (2011) and The Sister (2012). With July (2014) and Strangers (2016), released notably via Sacred Bones and Bella Union, she settled into a terrain where folk, ambient and touches of indie rock intersect. For My Crimes (2018), the collaborative Droneflower (2019) with Stephen Brodsky and The Path of the Clouds (2021) continue these explorations, at times drawing Nadler closer to metal and experimental spheres through duets and cross‑disciplinary projects.
