Lou Barlow

Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1966 and raised between Michigan and Massachusetts, Lou Barlow has been a fixture in the history of American indie rock since the early 1980s. After a stint in the hardcore band Deep Wound with Scott Helland and J Mascis, he co‑founded Dinosaur Jr. in 1984, where his bass playing and songwriting contrasted with the group's noisy approach until his departure after Bug in 1988. He then developed Sebadoh with Eric Gaffney and later Jason Loewenstein, a trio blending alternative rock, homespun folk, pop‑noise and home recordings; albums such as The Freed Man (1989), Weed Forestin’ (1990) and Sebadoh III (1991) accompanied the rise of the lo‑fi aesthetic. In parallel, Barlow released more stripped‑down, often acoustic songs under the name Sentridoh, recorded alone. In the mid‑1990s he also formed the duo The Folk Implosion with John Davis, mixing indie rock, abstract hip‑hop and off‑kilter melodies, and reunited with Dinosaur Jr. in 2005 for an enduring reformation. His solo work under his own name—Emoh (2005), Goodnight Unknown (2009), Brace the Wave (2015) and Reason to Live (2021)—finds him tightening his songwriting around an intimate, folk‑tinged and electric vein, while retaining the DIY spirit that runs through his discography.
