K-OS
Active since the late 1990s, K‑OS has been part of the Canadian alternative hip‑hop scene, blending rap, singing and influences from soul, reggae and rock. Born Kevin Brereton in 1972 in Toronto to a family from Trinidad and Tobago, he grew up in Ontario and early on developed a taste for rap and pop that he later fed into K‑OS's productions. After several demos and appearances on the local hip‑hop circuit, K‑OS drew attention in the early 2000s with the album “Exit” (2002), which established a style where boom‑bap rhythms, guitars, sung choruses and reggae references coexist. He followed with “Joyful Rebellion” (2004) and “Atlantis: Hymns for Disco” (2006), reinforcing the hybrid nature of his writing—between personal introspection and commentary on pop culture. The album “Yes!” (2009) confirmed K‑OS’s interest in organic arrangements, while “BLack on BLonde” (2013), conceived as a double hip‑hop and rock project, made this aesthetic duality explicit. With “Can’t Fly Without Gravity” (2015), K‑OS continued his back‑and‑forth between melodic rap and more electric sounds, while increasing occasional collaborations—most notably with The Chemical Brothers—and appearing on festival stages in Canada and abroad.
