Jesse Malin
Born in Queens, New York in 1967, Jesse Malin grew up in the local punk scene and took the stage at a very young age with the hardcore band Heart Attack, before becoming in the 1990s the voice of D Generation, a New York outfit straddling punk rock, glam and street rock. As a solo artist, Jesse Malin built on that background to develop a songwriting style that blends American rock, roots rock, Americana and urban folk, with songs focused on the city, personal trajectories and melodies more direct than in his hardcore beginnings. His first solo album, The Fine Art of Self Destruction (2002), produced by Ryan Adams, marked that shift, followed by The Heat (2004), Glitter in the Gutter (2007) — which features Bruce Springsteen on 'Broken Radio' — and Love It to Life (2010). He later released New York Before the War and Outsiders in 2015, Sunset Kids in 2019, produced by Lucinda Williams and Tom Overby, and Sad and Beautiful World in 2021. Whether performing with the St. Mark's Social or under his own name, Jesse Malin retains a writing voice rooted in New York, between punk energy, classic rock and roots-tinged ballads.
