Jeru The Damaja
A rapper from the East New York neighborhood in Brooklyn, Kendrick Jeru Davis, known as Jeru The Damaja, emerged in the early 1990s within the Gang Starr Foundation—first through appearances on Gang Starr albums and then with his first solo maxi singles. Rooted in New York boom‑bap hip‑hop, Jeru The Damaja developed a style built on precise phrasing, socially conscious lyrics and a recurring critique of rap’s industrialization. Entirely produced by DJ Premier, his debut album The Sun Rises in the East (1994) established an aesthetic of dry rhythms, soul and jazz samples and detailed urban narratives, followed in 1996 by Wrath of the Math, still in an old‑school East Coast vein. Jeru The Damaja then pursued a more independent path with Divine Design (2003) and Still Rising (2007), increased collaborations within the New York scene and remained a strong presence on European and American stages.
