La Phaze
Formed in Angers in the late 1990s around Damny Baluteau and Arnaud Fournier, La Phaze developed a blend of punk rock, drum and bass, jungle, ragga, dub and hip‑hop the band themselves summed up with the term “pungle”. Initially conceived as a project combining machines, vocals, guitars and sound‑system culture, La Phaze emerged on the French independent scene with the EP Cushy Time in 2001 and the album Pungle Roads in 2002, followed by the compilation Punglistic Mixture in 2003. The band then refined a more direct, forceful formula on Fin de Cycle (2005) and Miracle (2008), where rock energy meets fast electronic rhythms, chanted choruses and lyrics marked by social and political concerns. Over the years the lineup shifted with the arrival of DJ Mouf, later DJ Nevrax and drummer Guillaume Rousé, strengthening the group’s live‑band dimension. Their trajectory also included collaborations with Mouss et Hakim, Keny Arkana and Eugene Hütz. After Psalms and Revolution (2011) La Phaze paused between 2012 and 2017 before resuming activity. Since then they have released VISIBLE(S) in 2020 and Pungle Generation in 2023, continuing to blend punk tension, basslines from electronic music and a dub legacy.
