Jeff "Tain" Watts

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1960, Jeff "Tain" Watts established himself in modern American jazz from the 1980s after attending the Berklee College of Music, where he met Branford Marsalis. A drummer and composer, Watts developed a musical language located between hard bop, post‑bop and contemporary jazz, characterized by highly articulated playing, a dense pulse and constant attention to group dynamics. First heard in Wynton Marsalis's quartet on several 1980s recordings, he later became a long‑term member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, a central formation in his career. Over the course of his career he has also collaborated with Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Garrett, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane and the Mingus Big Band, while leading his own projects. As a leader his discography includes Megawatts (1991), Citizen Tain (1999), Bar Talk (2002), Watts (2009), Blue, Vol. 1 (2015) and Blue, Vol. 2 (2018). In both his compositions and his playing, Watts blends precise structures, rhythmic tension and a fluid movement between acoustic tradition and the more open forms of contemporary jazz.
