La Grande Sophie

La Grande Sophie, born Sophie Huriaux, is a French singer and musician. Born in Thionville in 1969, she learned guitar in her teens and grew up in the south, near Marseille. As a teenager she formed her first band, Entrée Interdite, and performed in local venues. After studying at the Marseille School of Fine Arts she moved to Paris, where in 1997 she released her first self-produced album, La Grande Sophie s’agrandit. Her career was launched by her second album Le Porte Bonheur (2001), thanks to the track “Martin.” After that album, which sold more than 30,000 copies, La Grande Sophie toured across France in solo concerts and at festivals. The next two albums, Et si c’était moi (2004) and La suite… (2006), were also big successes, and she was honored at the Victoires de la Musique in 2005. Her fifth studio album, Des vagues et des ruisseaux, went gold in 2009. The darker, more introspective La place du fantôme (2012) only confirmed the special place she holds in the hearts of the French. In 2013 La Grande Sophie performed at numerous festivals.
