Jan Akkerman

Born in Amsterdam in 1946, Jan Akkerman established himself from the 1960s on the Dutch scene with Johnny and his Cellar Rockers, The Hunters and later Brainbox, before co-founding Focus with Thijs van Leer at the end of the decade. His career lies at the crossroads of progressive rock, blues rock, jazz rock and a lasting affinity for classical forms, notably nourished by his interest in the lute and Renaissance music. With Focus, Jan Akkerman contributed to the rise of a sound blending electric virtuosity, classical-derived structures, and rock energy, documented, among others, on Focus II (1971), Focus 3 (1972) and Hamburger Concerto (1974). In parallel and after leaving the group, Akkerman developed a solo career marked by more open formats, between acoustic pieces, fusion, blues and jazz, on albums such as Profile (1972), Tabernakel (1973), Eli with Kaz Lux (1976), Aranjuez with Claus Ogerman (1978), then Puccini’s Café (1993), Blues Hearts (1994), Passion (1999), Minor Details (2011) and Close Beauty (2019). Over the decades he alternates between personal projects, collaborations and concerts under his name, with precise, agile playing that moves from rock riffs to improvisation, without breaking with his melodic roots.
