Kid Creole and The Coconuts

Kid Creole and The Coconuts was formed in New York in the late 1970s around singer, songwriter and producer August Darnell, a former member of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. Conceived as a stage orchestra with the flamboyant persona of Kid Creole at its center and the female vocal trio The Coconuts, the group blended tropical pop, funk, disco, Caribbean sounds, Latin influences, jazz and big‑band elements in an aesthetic inspired by cabaret, musical theatre and dance music. Kid Creole and The Coconuts emerged on the ZE Records label with the album Off the Coast of Me in 1980, followed by Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places in 1981 and Tropical Gangsters in 1982, which significantly broadened the band’s audience—especially in Europe—thanks to several widely played singles. The records Doppelganger (1983), In Praise of Older Women and Other Crimes (1985) and I, Too, Have Seen the Woods (1987) continued this mix of sung narrative, ironic dialogue and brass‑rich arrangements. Often associated with the New York and London club scenes, Kid Creole and The Coconuts developed highly choreographed concerts and collaborated with numerous musicians from funk, disco and pop. The career continued through the 1990s and 2000s with releases such as Private Waters in the Great Divide (1990) and I Wake Up Screaming (2011), supported by regular touring and ongoing reworkings of the group’s repertoire.
