Ilse DeLange

Born in Almelo, the Netherlands, in 1977, Ilse DeLange established herself from the late 1990s on the Dutch scene with a Nashville-inspired country sound rooted in pop. After beginnings in local bands, she recorded her debut solo album World of Hurt in Nashville in 1998, which combined contemporary country, Americana and melodic pop. She followed with Dear John in 1999, a tribute to the songwriting of John Hiatt, then explored a more pop-rock register on Livin’ on Love (2000), Clean Up (2003), The Great Escape (2006) and Incredible (2008), while remaining focused on English-language guitar songs and vocally driven ballads. Throughout the 2010s she alternated studio albums such as Eye of the Hurricane (2012) with a more roots-oriented record, Gravel & Dust (2019), marked by a stripped-back Americana aesthetic, before opening her sound further to pop on Changes (2020). In parallel with her solo career she founded the project The Common Linnets in 2013 with singer Waylon; they represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2014 and then developed the band around a country-folk sound. Also active as a coach on television music shows and having appeared in the American series Nashville, Ilse DeLange continues a trajectory in which country, pop and folk remain at the heart of her artistic identity.
