Illa J

Born in Detroit (Michigan), Illa J, whose real name is John Derek Yancey, continues the city’s hip‑hop tradition while developing a distinctive identity at the crossroads of rap and soulful singing. The younger brother of producer J Dilla, he emerged in the late 2000s with the album “Yancey Boys” (2008), built from instrumentals left by his brother and released on the Delicious Vinyl label, immediately connecting him to a clearly identified legacy. Based subsequently between Detroit, Los Angeles and Canada, Illa J refined a more melodic style open to contemporary R&B, alternating rapped verses, sung choruses and productions shaded by jazz and funk. After a period with Slum Village, he pursued solo projects with “Illa J” (2015), “Home” (2017) and “John Yancey” (2018), while also forming the Yancey Boys duo with Frank Nitt and collaborating with the Canadian duo Potatohead People. His discography thus moves between boom‑bap‑influenced hip‑hop, modern soul and gentle electronic atmospheres, with a constant focus on warm grooves and introspective songwriting.
