Katia Guerreiro
Born in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, into a Portuguese family, Katia Guerreiro grows up later on São Miguel Island in the Azores, before moving to Lisbon to study medicine. It is in the Portuguese capital that she begins around the turn of the 2000s a career in fado, after more diverse musical experiences during her studies. Katia Guerreiro develops an approach anchored in traditional fado, carried by a sober interpretation and a repertoire that makes classic airs dialogue with texts by Portuguese authors. Her discography begins with Fado Maior in 2001, followed by Nas Mãos do Fado in 2003, Tudo ou Nada in 2005, Fado in 2008, Os Fados do Fado in 2009, 10 Anos - Nas Asas do Fado in 2010, Património in 2012 and Até ao Fim in 2014. Over the years, she collaborates notably with Paulo Valentim, João Veiga, Bernardo Sassetti, Martinho da Vila and Ney Matogrosso, in a frame faithful to the genre’s aesthetics. Katia Guerreiro performs widely outside Portugal, on stages and festivals in Europe as well as in Latin America, with appearances at Olympia in Paris or at the Festival Internacional Cervantino. Katia Guerreiro thus pursues a path inscribed in the continuity of Lisbon fado, between attachment to inherited forms and setting Portuguese poetry to music.
