Justin Robertson

Born in Manchester in 1968, Justin Robertson belongs to the first generation of DJs and producers shaped by the Hacienda boom and the British dance scene of the late 1980s. He started out in the early 1990s primarily as a remixer, working for acts such as Erasure, The Sugarcubes and Fortran 5, before developing a more personal approach with his project Lionrock. Lionrock fused progressive house, breakbeat, dub and hip‑hop, gradually adopting a more pronounced big‑beat sensibility as the decade progressed. With Lionrock he released the albums An Instinct for Detection (1996) and City Delirious (1998), and his music circulated both in clubs and on festival stages like Pinkpop and Pukkelpop. After that period Robertson pursued a multifaceted career as a DJ, producer and compiler; he became one of the faces of the Bugged Out! nights and also explored electro and electroclash under the name Revtone, releasing a self-titled album in 2001. In subsequent years he collaborated with artists such as Fatboy Slim, Tim Burgess, Ernest Ranglin and Daniel Avery, and later revived a more psychedelic, oblique side of his sound with The Deadstock 33s, where acid house, post‑punk, krautrock and club electronics intersect.
