JoyCut
Based in Bologna, Italy, JoyCut has been developing since the early 2000s a project that sits between electronic post-rock, dark wave and industrial textures. The trio, built around Pasquale Pezzillo, Christian Montanarella and Gaël Frizion, produces often-instrumental music structured by repetitive rhythmic motifs, dense synth layers and processed guitars that tend toward a cinematic atmosphere. JoyCut released their first album, The Very Strange Tale of the Man Who Did Not See a Train Coming, in 2007, followed by Ghost Trees Where To Disappear in 2011 and PiecesOfUsWereLeftOnTheGround in 2013, on which themes related to the environment and the relationship between technologies and landscapes become more pronounced. With TheBluWave [Time], released in 2022, JoyCut continues this work in extended atmospheric forms, playing on contrasts between mechanical pulses, recessed vocals and more stripped-back ambient passages. On stage, JoyCut favors percussive and visual setups that enhance the immersive dimension of this repertoire, presented across various international independent circuits and at discovery festivals such as SXSW in Austin.
