John Scofield

American guitarist born in 1951 in Dayton, Ohio, John Scofield has developed since the mid-1970s an electric jazz style shaped by post-bop, funk, blues and rock influences. Trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Scofield gained attention alongside figures such as Billy Cobham, Charles Mingus and Gary Burton before joining Miles Davis’s group in the early 1980s—a period that anchored his playing in an aesthetic both lyrical and highly rhythmic. On albums like Blue Matter (1987) and A Go Go (1998) with Medeski, Martin & Wood, he has repeatedly explored the intersections of groove, jazz improvisation and more fusion-oriented textures, while continuing to lead groups in trio, quartet or organ formats. Recordings such as Works for Me (2001), Überjam (2002), Country for Old Men (2016) and the self-titled John Scofield (2022) illustrate a trajectory where original compositions, reworkings of standards and forays into country and soul intermingle. Long based in New York, Scofield regularly shares the stage with musicians of different generations and is active as an educator within the American jazz community.
