Gwar

Formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984, GWAR emerged out of Death Piggy and the collective Slave Pit Inc., which brought together musicians, visual artists and set builders within a frequently changing lineup. GWAR blends thrash metal, heavy metal, crossover thrash and black humor, with a direct sound rooted in hardcore punk and a grotesque science‑fiction aesthetic embodied by costumed characters. Their first album, Hell-O (1988), established the foundations of a mix of satire, provocation and theatricality, later developed on Scumdogs of the Universe (1990) and America Must Be Destroyed (1992). In the 1990s GWAR moved within American metal circuits and alternative culture and made on‑screen appearances with the film Phallus in Wonderland (1992), while diversifying their music on Ragnarök (1995) and Carnival of Chaos (1997). After returning to a more confrontational approach on Violence Has Arrived (2001) and War Party (2004), GWAR experienced several significant changes, including the death of Dave Brockie in 2014; Michael Bishop then took over vocals under the name Blöthar. GWAR later released The Blood of Gods (2017) and The New Dark Ages (2022), maintaining a stage universe based on the absurd, political satire and deliberately excessive visual effects.
