Gruppo Sportivo
Formed in the mid-1970s in The Hague, Netherlands, around singer-songwriter and guitarist Hans Vandenburg, Gruppo Sportivo was part of the European pop and new wave movement while cultivating a humorous, offbeat tone. The band developed a blend of energetic pop, light rock and ska/retro influences, characterized by English lyrics, short song structures and a vocal interplay often in call-and-response between Vandenburg and the female backing singers. Gruppo Sportivo first gained attention on the Dutch scene and then across Europe at the end of the 1970s with the albums "10 Mistakes" (1978) and "Back to ’78" (1978), followed by records such as "Copy Copy" (1980) and "Pop! Goes the Brain" (1981), which established a style where catchy melodies and irony coexisted. After an initial period of intense activity in the early 1980s—marked by several lineup changes and tours outside the Netherlands—the band slowed down and retreated before returning to the stage periodically. The group resumed its activities more steadily in the 2010s with new recordings including "Great" (2018), thus carrying Gruppo Sportivo’s pop-new-wave aesthetic to multiple generations of listeners.
